What is the AFQT?

The Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) is not a separate exam — it's a score derived from four ASVAB subtests. Every branch uses your AFQT percentile as the first gate for enlistment. Get past that gate and your line scores decide which jobs you can pick.

How the AFQT is scored

The military combines your subtests like this: first, Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension form your Verbal Expression (VE) score. Then the AFQT raw score is 2 × VE + Arithmetic Reasoning + Mathematics Knowledge. That raw number is converted to a percentile against a reference group of 18–23 year-olds, so an AFQT of 65 means you outscored 65% of them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the AFQT?
The Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) is the portion of the ASVAB that decides whether you can enlist. It's calculated from four subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension.
How is the AFQT score calculated?
AFQT = 2 × VE + AR + MK, where VE (Verbal Expression) comes from your Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension scores. The raw result is converted to a percentile from 1 to 99.
What AFQT score do I need?
You need at least 31 for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Space Force, 32 for the Marines, and 36 for the Coast Guard. A score of 50 or higher opens far more jobs and bonuses.
Is the AFQT the same as the ASVAB?
No. The ASVAB is the full 9-subtest battery. The AFQT is only the 4 subtests used to determine enlistment eligibility.
