Air Force ASVAB Scores

The Air Force requires an AFQT score of at least 31 with a high-school diploma, but 65 with a GED — the strictest GED standard of any branch. Jobs (AFSCs) are then gated by four MAGE composites: Mechanical, Administrative, General, and Electronics. General equals VE + AR, and each AFSC lists a minimum in one or more MAGE areas.
Your Air Force ASVAB score is judged in two stages. To enlist, you need an AFQT of at least 31 with a high-school diploma — but a 65 with a GED, the strictest GED standard of any branch. To qualify for a specific job, called an AFSC (Air Force Specialty Code), you must meet minimums in one or more of the four MAGE composites: Mechanical, Administrative, General, and Electronics. The AFQT decides whether the Air Force will take you; MAGE decides what it will let you do.
The Air Force AFQT Minimum: 31 (or 65 with a GED)
The AFQT is a percentile from 1 to 99 built from four subtests using the formula 2 × VE + AR + MK, where VE (Verbal Expression) is derived from Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension. For the Air Force in 2026:
- High-school diploma: AFQT 31 minimum.
- GED holders: AFQT 65 minimum — a 34-point jump, the largest diploma-to-GED gap among the branches (the Army and Navy require 50 for GED holders).
Worth knowing if you are weighing both services: the Space Force uses Air Force standards — the same AFQT 31 minimum (65 with a GED) and the same MAGE composite system for its specialty codes.

What Are MAGE Composites?
While the Army names 10 line scores and the Navy sums subtests per rating, the Air Force condenses everything into four composites, remembered by the acronym MAGE:

Notice that General = VE + AR — the same formula as the Army’s GT score, just under a different name. The Auto & Shop subtest counts twice in the Mechanical composite, which is why hands-on shop knowledge pays off disproportionately for maintenance-bound applicants. And because AR appears in General and Electronics and the AFQT, arithmetic word problems are the highest-leverage topic on the whole test. The Administrative composite has historically drawn on legacy speed subtests (Numerical Operations and Coding Speed) that are no longer administered, so treat any single published formula for it as approximate. How AFSCs Use MAGE Minimums
Every AFSC publishes a minimum in one or more MAGE areas — a mechanical maintenance specialty might require a Mechanical score at a stated level, a cyber or avionics field will set an Electronics minimum, and administrative or support roles reference the Administrative or General composite. Some technical AFSCs require minimums in two composites at once.
The practical consequences:
- Your subtest mix determines your menu. Two airmen with identical AFQT percentiles can qualify for completely different AFSC lists depending on where their subtest strength sits.
- Technical fields set higher bars. Avionics, cyber, and nuclear-adjacent specialties commonly demand the strongest Electronics and General scores.
- Minimums shift with manning needs. The Air Force raises or lowers AFSC cutoffs over time, so treat published numbers as typical values and confirm current requirements with a recruiter.
Since composites are sums of standard scores (average 50 per subtest, most between 20 and 80), scoring even modestly above average on every subtest in a composite lifts you past a large share of applicants.
How to Raise Your MAGE Scores
Map your prep to the composite your target AFSC checks:
- General (VE + AR): build vocabulary, practice timed reading, and drill arithmetic word problems. Remember, no calculator is allowed on the ASVAB.
- Electronics (GS + AR + MK + EI): review circuits, current, and components alongside core math and general science.
- Mechanical (MC + GS + 2 × AS): study levers, gears, pulleys, and basic auto and shop principles — AS counting double makes it the fastest lever here.
- Administrative: strengthen WK and PC, which feed VE and your AFQT at the same time.
Then benchmark under time pressure with an Air Force ASVAB practice test, find the weak subtest inside your target composite, and re-drill it. If test day falls short, the retake policy allows a second attempt after 1 calendar month, and scores remain valid for 2 years.
