The ASVAB Mathematics Knowledge (MK) subtest measures how well you handle high-school math concepts — algebra, geometry, exponents, square roots, factoring, and solving equations. Unlike word problems, MK questions usually hand you an equation or figure and ask for a direct answer. What Mathematics Knowledge tests

MK is “pure” math. Most questions give you numbers, variables, or a shape rather than a story. That is the key difference from Arithmetic Reasoning, the other math subtest, which hides the math inside a real-world scenario. Everything on MK comes from a standard high-school curriculum — there is no trigonometry or calculus.

Algebra: solve for the variable

Most MK algebra asks you to isolate a single variable. The rule is to do the same operation to both sides until the variable stands alone.

Solve for x: 3x + 7 = 22

  • Subtract 7 from both sides: 3x = 15
  • Divide both sides by 3: x = 5

You will also see FOIL (First, Outer, Inner, Last) for multiplying two binomials: (x + 2)(x + 3) = x² + 5x + 6. Practice reversing that process, because factoring is just FOIL run backward.

Exponents and roots

Exponents show up constantly, so lock in the basic rules:

  • Multiply like bases: add the exponents — x³ · x² = x⁵
  • Divide like bases: subtract the exponents — x⁵ ÷ x² = x³
  • Power of a power: multiply — (x²)³ = x⁶
  • Negative exponent: flip it — x⁻² = 1 / x²
  • Square roots: √36 = 6, √49 = 7

Memorize the perfect squares up to 15² = 225. Recognizing them instantly saves precious seconds when there is no calculator.

Geometry, area, and volume

  • Circle area: πr² · Circumference: 2πr
  • Box (rectangular prism) volume: length × width × height
  • Pythagorean theorem: a² + b² = c² for right triangles

Example: Find the area of a circle with radius 5. Area = πr² = π × 5² = 25π ≈ 78.5 square units.

6 strategies to raise your MK score

  1. Memorize the core formulas. Area, volume, and the Pythagorean theorem appear on almost every test. Formula recall is the single biggest lever on your MK score.
  2. Master order of operations. Work through parentheses, exponents, multiplication/division, then addition/subtraction (PEMDAS). Careless ordering is the most common way people lose easy points.
  3. Get comfortable factoring. Being able to factor quadratics and pull out common terms turns slow algebra problems into quick ones.
  4. Drill mental math. With no calculator, practice fractions, percents, and squares until they are instant.
  5. Plug in the answers. When solving directly stalls, test each answer choice in the equation — one of them has to work.
  6. Never leave a blank. There is no penalty for guessing, so eliminate obvious wrong choices and pick the best remaining option.

Question count and timing

  • CAT-ASVAB (computer, taken at MEPS): 16 questions, 20 minutes — roughly 75 seconds each, adaptive.
  • Paper ASVAB (P&P): 25 questions, 24 minutes.
  • No calculator on either version; scratch paper is provided.
