People say “the ASVAB math section,” but there isn’t one — there are two, and they reward different skills:

Both matter equally to your AFQT, but most people should start with MK. It rebuilds the fundamentals (fractions, equations, geometry rules) that AR word problems then apply. What Arithmetic Reasoning Covers

AR is applied arithmetic. Expect word problems on:

  • Rates and speed — distance, time, work rates, combined work
  • Ratios and proportions — scaling recipes, maps, mixtures
  • Percentages — discounts, tax, tips, percent change, simple interest
  • Money problems — wages, budgets, unit prices
  • Multi-step scenarios — problems that chain two or three operations

What Mathematics Knowledge Covers

MK is high-school math tested directly, with no story wrapper:

  • Algebra — solving equations and inequalities, exponents, factoring, evaluating expressions
  • Fractions and decimals — operations, conversions, comparisons
  • Geometry — angles, triangles, circles, perimeter, area, volume
  • Number properties — primes, factors, multiples, order of operations

There’s no calculus and no trigonometry. MK is the most “studyable” subtest on the ASVAB: if you re-learn the rules and memorize the formulas, the questions are predictable. How Both Feed Your AFQT — and Your Line Scores

The AFQT formula is 2 × VE + AR + MK. VE (verbal) is doubled, but AR and MK together make up half the raw formula, so a weak math day directly threatens your branch minimum. Math’s influence doesn’t stop there:

  • GT (General Technical) includes AR — and GT 110 is the classic cutoff for many Army jobs and OCS (see GT score).
  • ST, EL, MM, and CL composites across the branches all pull in AR, MK, or both.

The No-Calculator Rule Changes How You Should Practice

Calculators are banned on every version of the ASVAB — CAT-ASVAB, paper, and PiCAT alike. You get scratch paper only (details in can you use a calculator on the ASVAB). This changes your prep in three concrete ways:

  1. Practice without one from day one. If you drill with a calculator and go cold on test day, your timing will collapse.
  2. Build estimation habits. Many wrong answer choices are far from the true value; a quick estimate can eliminate two or three options before you compute anything.
  3. Write clean setups. Under time pressure, arithmetic errors come from messy scratch work. Practice organizing every problem the same way: knowns, unknown, equation, solve.

A Two-Week ASVAB Math Plan

A simple structure that works:

  • Days 1–2: Take the quiz above plus the AR practice test to benchmark both subtests. Log every miss by topic.
  • Days 3–7: MK fundamentals — one topic per day from the study guide (fractions, equations, exponents, geometry, number properties), plus 10 formula flashcards daily.
